God Is Love?
Modern ideas about religion in the West have changed greatly in the last century as social control by organised religions has collapsed. People have begun to form their own religious ideas and often know only a little of the doctrines and dogmas of the religion or denomination of their ancestors and a smattering of other religious cultures. A little bit of "do unto others" from Christianity, a bit of karma from the Hindus, a bit of "earth is sacred" from the Red Indians and maybe some meditation from Buddhism. But nothing from Islam.
Probably the most widely held modern religious cliché is "God Is Love." It is very difficult to get an understanding of "Allah is Love" from the Quran unless you really, really want to and aren't very observant. The myth that the "Abrahamic religions" share the same God is one that modern Muslims in the West push pretty hard though they tend to keep quiet about how Allah says Christianity is false and corrupt.
Jesus defines Christianity in 2 rules:
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
Muhammad doesn't define Islam so simply but you can get the gist:
Muhammad is the Messenger of God, and those who are with him are hard against the unbelievers, merciful one to another. - Quran (48:29)
So if your neighbour is a Muslim, Allah commands him to show you no mercy or compassion. He's not to be your friend (or else Allah will punish him later) but he can pretend friendliness and lie to protect himself or Islam.
The believers must not establish friendship with the unbelievers in preference to the faithful. Whoever does so has nothing to hope for from God unless he does it out of fear or taqiyah (pious dissimulation). God warns you about Himself. To God do all things return. - Quran (3:28)
There are many other verses that show brotherhood in Islam is not for the non-Muslim. Of course, Muslims ignore these commandments because their natural ethics transcend the viciousness of Allah. The Golden Rule of other religions does not exist in Islam which is full of calls to violence and conquest.
